Lab Orchestration Platform

Defining, integrating and orchestrating laboratory modules into a workflow is one of the central topics of our research. As laboratory equipment gets more and more digitized and communication standards like OPC UA or MQTT are established data can be transferred to IT systems easily nowadays. As soon as tasks must be executed in a chronological sequence, the laboratory lacks what is already successfully used in industry – a process control system. This orchestration is what we focus on. It will guide and support the lab assistants in their work and enable them to easily automate and orchestrate his “robotic assistants”.

As laboratory equipment more and more gets digitized and communication standards like OPC UA or MQTT are established, the devices’ data can already be transferred to IT systems but as soon as tasks must be executed the laboratory lacks a proper platform. To elaborate this platform, the so-called orchestration layer, and to provide modules which offer laboratory tasks as automated services are the central topics of our research. As a result, this can either guide and support the lab assistant in his work or enable him to easily automate and orchestrate his “robotic assistants”.
